I started using Monat in the summer of 2020. It’s now the end of 2025 and I am STILL using Monat as the only haircare I use.

Here’s my Monat story, honest thoughts, and everything I think you need to know before purchasing Monat for healthier-looking hair.

My goals for the last 5 years were: hair growth and length, thickness, frizz reduction, health of hair, reduce split-ends, AND trying to go longer between washes. (more photos down below). Amazingly, ALL of those things have greatly improved.

Here’s a quick photo look down memory lane.

(I included captions above because I did have a baby this year so I’m wondering if I’m still on the “high” of great/thick hair due to hormonal shifts. I wanted to be transparent on that, so I included a photo on the right hand side that was a year ago – prepregnancy.)

My Journey with Monat

I started using Monat in the summer of 2020 when my hair was in pretty rough shape with a lot of hair breakage. I had fragile hair, split ends, frizz, and overall damage that needed help.

I’m really not a fan of the MLM/pyramid scheme model, but my good friend started selling Monat. I saw how much it helped her hair, so I gave it a try. I feel OK about buying this product because it truly is a good product. If you’re hesitant because it’s a multi-level marketing product, I get it. But this one actually isn’t junk! One of the main reasons I never decided to sell it myself (or become a market partner) was because I just don’t love MLM models. But, I overlook that factor and continue to be a loyal customer because I just love these products so much now, lol!

I started with the Renew Shampoo. But about a year in, I switched to the Revive Volumizing Shampoo, and that ended up being the right choice for my hair follicles.

I’ve been using that one (and the matching Revitalize Conditioner) for almost four years now. If you want to start with just two things from the hair care line, I would honestly go with those.

They’ve given me consistent, healthier looking hair over time without needing a million extra steps.

I do use a couple styling products when I blow dry, and I keep the dry shampoo around for those days when I really need it, but I don’t reach for it often.

The Products I Have Stuck With (and continue to repurchase)
  • Volumizing Shampoo (one bottle lasts me about 6-8 months.. !!!!… washing my hair every 5 days or so)
  • Volumizing Conditioner ((one bottle lasts me about 6-8 months.. !!!!… washing my hair every 5 days or so)
  • Dry Shampoo (I only use now on rare occasions if my hair is really dirty and I need to look good, otherwise my hair stays pretty grease-free until wash day)
  • Blow Out Cream (GREAT if you blow dry your hair, I only blow dry on occassion these days.. so one bottle has lasted me well over a year at this point)
  • Volume & Lift Spray (not sold individually on Amazon, but you can find it on the Monat website HERE or in the shampoo/conditioner/spray bundle on Amazon HERE)
  • Heat Protectant Spray – really should use this more often, I just use it when I think to, but great for protecting hair if you constantly straighten/blow dry/curl/etc.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO BUY ALL OF THESE! Simply switching to the shampoo/conditioner IMO is enough. No matter how much hair you have, start with the basics.

When I started out I did this and the only other hair product I used was a dry shampoo (Living Proof’s).. I later switched to the Monat Dry Shampoo as mentioned above and added in the other products.

Most of the Monat products are actually sold on Amazon, but I’ve found it’s sometimes more pricey. Sometimes not, so just do your research on where you want to purchase from!

What I Love About Monat Shampoo/Conditioner

  • One bottle of shampoo lasts me about six months. You truly only need a dime size amount, which makes it stretch so much longer than most brands.
  • It lathers beautifully when you rub it in your hands first. Once you apply it to your scalp, it foams up a ton and feels like a real deep clean without feeling harsh.
  • The ingredients are cleaner than most shampoos. I feel so much better using this as a long-term product, especially since it’s something I use on a daily basis.
  • It has helped reduce my split ends. My hair just looks healthier and feels stronger at the ends than it did years ago.
  • I can now go five days between washes. When I first started using Monat, I was washing my hair every other day. Now I can comfortably stretch it, and my hair still looks clean and fresh.

Is It Worth the Price?

Okay, here’s the thing: don’t pay full price.

Monat runs big sitewide promotions constantly, 30–40% off is extremely normal. Wait for the sales, become a VIP member (find market partners to work with or just sign up!) if the perks make sense for you, and stock up on your regular items then. That’s what I do.

This is my current back stock. I purchased a bunch at the last 40% off sitewide sale. I won’t need to restock again for probably 1 – 1.5 YEARS!

And honestly, because the formulas don’t use harsh chemicals and you usually need less product than traditional shampoos with sodium chloride or sodium benzoate-heavy formulas, the bottles last me a LONG time. (one bottle of shampoo literally lasts me 6 months!) Monat’s ingredients
are just top notch!

I’ve also compared price tags with other high end hair care products at hair salons, and Monat is pretty similar, often times way cheaper if you catch it on sale.

Is Monat Actually a Good Product?

My goodness, yes. I love it, but you truly have to commit to using it. It’s kind of like eating healthy.

Eating a salad one day, or even for a whole month, isn’t going to bring massive results. But a year into eating healthier? Now the good things start adding up. And five years into choosing better ingredients? You probably look and feel like a whole new person.

This is how I think about any healthy swap, whether it’s cleaner beauty products, skin care products, or hair care.

Monat uses a lot of natural ingredients and botanical extracts like camellia oleifera seed oil, crambe abyssinica seed oil, and even pea extract (pisum sativum), and I think sticking with those kinds of ingredient lists over a long time really does go a long way.

For me, the results have shown up slowly, just like any long term wellness innovations. It’ not overnight and there won’t be some crazy rapid growth, but steady and noticeable over time.

Does Monat Cause Hair Loss?

No. I’ve seen so much discussion about this on social media, and I really don’t get it. I’ve not experienced anything remotely like dramatic hair loss, scalp irritation, or any kind of negative reaction.

I’ve never dealt with bald spots, hair shedding beyond what’s normal, or any allergic reaction at all.

I’m sure, just like with every single beauty product line on the market, some people have had adverse reactions or negative side effects. I mean, there are mixed reviews on literally everything, from essential oils to skin care.

There have been class-action lawsuits and numerous complaints about many hair products across the beauty industry (not just Monat’s products). The beauty industry is huge, and any time a company grows quickly, especially one with a business opportunity tied to sales reps or market partner programs, it gets extra attention.

In my honest opinion, you really just need to try it for yourself. Everyone’s hair type is different, and what causes an adverse reaction for one person may be great for someone else. I can only speak from my own five year experience, and mine has been nothing but positive.

Conclusion

After five years of using Monat, I can honestly say it’s been one of the best long term changes I’ve made for my hair.

It wasn’t an overnight transformation, but sticking with the products has given me healthier hair, fewer split ends, and a routine that actually works for my lifestyle. If you’re curious about trying it, start with just the basics and give it time.

Everyone’s hair is different, but my experience has been incredibly positive, and I truly feel great about using these products for the long haul.

(Monat also offers skincare products, but I haven’t tried any of those.)
